Farm Yard Episode 3

Farmer
Well hello boys and girls!

Wait for it

Farmer
I’m sorry but I didn’t hear you. Can you say hello on the count of
horse? bird….squirrel…horse!

Wait for it.

Farmer
Wow…that was much better. Welcome back to the Farm yard! I
am so glad that you are here with me today. My name is Farmer
Karen. I’ve been looking forward to hanging out with you! I was
just about to wake up the professor….

Phone rings

Farmer
Excuse but I’ve got to answer this….Hello, Farmer Karen! Okay….
well I need to take care of that…I’ll be right there. (Hangs up) Kids
I am so sorry but I have to go give some medicine to a sheep…he’s
been feeling sick so I am going to help him out. But first I need my
gloves…where oh where are my new fangled gloves…mmmm

(Looks around up and down while the gloves are obviously right there).

Farmer
Kids have you seen my gloves? Where? Over there? Oh I see…
thanks so much…

About to walk off camera.

Farmer
Oh…I was going to wake up Professor Clauu but I need to give
medicine to the sheep … would you please wake the Professor
up for me? Thanks! So on the count of horse … (we’ll see the
animals on screen) you’ll need to yell as loud as you can “WAKE
UP PROFESSOR CLAUU!”….are you ready! Great…wait for the
animals to show up on the screen!…I’ll see you soon! kangaroo…
mouse…horse

WAKE UP PROFESSOR CLAUU!

Clauu
MMM…it feels early to me…But I know that I would not be
woken up unless it is time to wake up! That sounded like
children! Could it be that the children have stopped by?

Professor Clauu appears

Clauu
Well….I was correct! The children have stopped by! Welcome
and thank you for waking me up. I was just dreaming about a
boat with feet. How interesting is that! Where is Farmer Karen?
Have you seen her?

Kid responses…

Clauu
Oh…well that sheep wasn’t looking too good last night at the
square dance. Did you know that we get wool from sheep! It’s
true! And did you know that bucket of wool makes ten miles of
yarn! It would take ½ day to walk 10 miles. All that yarn would
make a lot of sweaters! Maybe I should get my friend a sweater.
Children do you think a sweater would be a nice birthday gift?
I’m trying to figure out what to get my friend Narky for his
birthday….mmmm…this is a tough one. Would you mind helping
me out? At the count of three – I want everyone to yell ONE
thing that they think would make a good gift for Narky – 1 2 3

Wait for it

Oh thank you so much for those great ideas. The problem is that
my friend Narky has everything a chicken could ask for. He is
the funniest chicken to be around. We have a great time together.
And his birthday is coming up and I just don’t know what to get
him. I don’t know what to do. HUH – this is confusing. . .

Farmer comes back on the scene

Farmer
Good day Professor! I see the kids were able to wake you up!

Professor
Correct! And they have been listening to me figure out what to
do for Narky.

Farmer
That’s right…his birthday is soon.

Clauu
Correct. And I just don’t know what do to for him. He has everything!

Farmer
I wonder (thinking)…Professor have you thought about praying
for him?

Clauu
Pray for Narky? You mean the kind of prayer where I talk to
God? That kind of prayer? Well…no I had not thought of that.
But what does that have to do with me trying to get a present for Narky?

Farmer
Oh professor. Praying for someone is a great gift.

Clauu
Huh. I had no idea. Every time I’ve talked with God it’s been to
thank him for my friends and family or to ask for something for
me like rain to fill up the pond.

Farmer
Professor I have an idea. I know a book that can help explain
why prayer is a great gift.

Clauu
Really? Is it a road map book or a telephone book or a comic book?

Farmer
No. Hey kids how about you help the professor out with this. What
book did God give us so we could get answers on how to live our life?
Wait for it.

Famer
The Bible! That’s right. The Bible is a great book to find answers.
And maybe we can find the answer to why prayer is a great gift.
Professor do you mind if we hear a story from the Bible?

Clauu
A Bible story! That’s sounds great!…can I turn on the farm a tron
so the kids can watch too?

Farmer
Yes please

Hits a button and the roof opens up and a big TV screen pops out for the story.

Illustrated with a voice over

Farmer
So professor what do you think?

Clauu
Delightfully educational I do say my dear Farmer Karen. That
King Herod was quite the ornery king – quite despicable - really
mean. I was quite delighted that Peter was set free.

Farmer
Yeah that is pretty cool.

Clauu
And to think that the people were praying for Peter and it helped!
I didn’t know that you could pray for other people.

Farmer
Yes. You can pray for other people any time you want. You can
pray for anyone anytime!

Clauu
So what does that have to do with Narky’s birthday?

Farmer
Well…you could pray to God that Narky has a great birthday
and that he always has great friends. Stuff like that.

Clauu
Oh. So like right now Narky and his Dad aren’t being very nice
to each other. I could pray that Narky and and his Dad start
working on being nice to one another?

Famre
Sure…that would be a great gift to Narky…and his Dad!

Clauu
Cool! I’m going to do it right now! (praying) God please help
Narky and his Dad be nice to one another. And please let me
know how I can help them be friends again. Amen.

Farmer
That was great. You can talk to God about yourself or about
your friends any time you want!

Clauu
I had no idea that I could pray for other people. That’s a great
gift! And I’ll probably get Narky a sweater for his birthday. Do
you think the sick sheep could give me some wool so I can
make a sweater?

Farmer
You’ll have to ask him but I bet he’s going to feel better soon.

Clauu
Great! I am going to make a full body sweater for Narky. He’s
gets cold sometimes when he goes on trips in the outer space….fade off

The Farmyard Week 2 Script

Farmer
Well hello boys and girls!

Wait for it

Farmer
I’m sorry but I didn’t hear you. Can you say hello on the count
of squirrel? horse….bird…squirrel!

Wait for it.

Farmer
Wow…that was much better. Welcome back to the Farm yard! I
am so glad that you are here with me today. My name is Farmer
Karen. It is going to be such a great day! I was just about to
wake up the professor….

Phone rings

Farmer
Excuse but I’ve got to answer this….Hello, Farmer Karen here!
Yes…oh my….everywhere?…okay…well I’ll be right there. Kids
I am so sorry but I have to go help clean up the chicken house…
There was a big accident involving some eggs, a can of spam, and
some potpourri. But first I need my rake…where oh where is
my handy dandy broom…mmmm

(looks around up and down while the broom is obviously right there).

Farmer
Kids have you seen my rake? Where? Over there? Oh I
see…thanks so much…

About to walk off camera.

Farmer
Oh…would you mind helping me on a small project? I was going
to wake up Professor Clauu but I need to clean up the chicken
house…could you wake the Professor up for me? Please?! Thanks!
So on the count of cat…you need to yell as loud as you can “WAKE
UP PROFESSOR CLAUU!”….are you ready! Great…wait for the
animals to show up on the screen!…I’ll see you soon!
dog…goldfish…cat

WAKE UP PROFESSOR CLAUU!

Clauu
MMM…ooooh…did you say the party gifts don’t look nice…that’s
devastating!...huh?..... what?….what was that noise?…it sounded
like some children that have woken me up before are right
outside me window!

Professor Clauu appears

Clauu
Well….I was correct! Welcome back children! Thank you for waking
me up. I was having a horrible nightmare because of this party I have
been working on. Where is Farmer Karen? Do you know where she
is? I’m sorry I couldn’t hear you.

Kid responses…

Clauu
Oh…she had to go to the chicken house? Interesting…let me tell
you some minutia about chickens I found in a library book…did
you know that even though chickens have wings they don’t really
fly! That’s preposterous – birds with wings that don’t fly. And
while they’re NOT flying – they can be real busy laying eggs. Did
you know that some chickens can lay up to 7 eggs a day…that’s a
lot of eggs! Can you hold up 7 fingers? That’s a lot of eggs in one
day isn’t it. You can put your hands back in your laps. Speaking
of chickens, Most chickens I know love a good party…oh no…the
party! I was having such a good time talking with you kids that I
totally forgot about the party. But now I remember and I’m
completely nervous again! Do you mind if I tell you why I’m nervous?

Wait for it

Oh thank you so much for listening…hopefully talking about it will
help me relax. Anyway…I am planning the biggest swim party that
this farm has seen in a long time. Even the owl doesn’t remember
a party this big! There’s going to be singing and dancing and eating
and of course swimming! At least I hope there is swimming! It hasn’t
rained in a while and the pond doesn’t have much water in it. And
if there isn’t enough water than no one will be able to swim. And if
no one will swim then this swim party I have been working on for
a long time will be absolutely ruined! I have been praying and praying
and praying to God for rain but it hasn’t rained yet! I’m so nervous!

Farmer comes back on the scene

Farmer
Good day Professor! So the kids were able to wake you up!

Professor
Oh yes most definitely…they have been so nice and understanding.
I was just telling them about the swim party we’re going to have
and that I’m really nervous.

Farmer
Oh…because the pond is low and it hasn’t rained yet?

Clauu
Correct.

Farmer
Well Professor you told me you have been praying to God about it.
So the best thing you can do is trust God. God will always be with you!

Clauu
What! It’s pretty tough to trust God right now. It hasn’t rained a drop!

Farmer
Oh professor. I hope that you trust God even if it doesn’t rain. You
can always trust God. He always wants the best for us.

Clauu
Well to be honest this is a tough idea for me. It’s tough for me to
trust God sometimes.

Professor I’m sure we can figure something out (thinking)….I’ve got
it…Professor when you were in college and you didn’t understand
something you would usually read a book right?

Clauu
Correct! I’d go to the library!

Farmer
And what is in the library?Clauu
Books of course! Rows of great books with pages and words. Oh how
I adore the library.

Farmer
Okay kids…this is where the Professor needs your help. What book
do you think God would want us to read to help us find answers?!
Wait for it.

The Bible! That’s right. The Bible is a great book to find answers.
There are all kinds of answers and stories and people in the Bible. In
fact we’re going to hear about one of those stories right now so we
can help Professor. Professor do you mind if we hear a story from the Bible?

Clauu
Not at all…I love Bible stories…can I turn on the farm a tron so the
kids can watch too?

Farmer
Yes please

Hits a button and the roof opens up and a big TV screen pops
out for the story.

Illustrated with a voice over

Farmer
So professor what do you think?

Clauu
Delightfully educational I do say my dear Farmer Karen. It is so
amazing that Jesus was able to just say a word and calm the storm!

So what did you think about Jesus’ friends? They seemed pretty scared.

Clauu
Well…I can understand why they were scared. It was a pretty big
storm. But they were with Jesus! Didn’t they know he would take
care of them?

Farmer
You’re right that Jesus would take care of them. But sometimes it
can be easy for people to get scared or worried.

Clauu
What? Why would you say it’s easy to get scared or worried when we
have this super powerful God on our side?

Farmer
Well…you’re right that God is on our side, but you’re still a little
worried about the party aren’t you?

Clauu
Oh no no…I’m not worried…I’m just passionately concerned that
the water is so low.

Farmer
Well…just like Jesus wanted his friends to trust him, God wants
us to trust him too.

Clauu
So it’s going to rain and fill up the pond!

Farmer
Maybe…I don’t know if it will rain. But there is something I do
know. No matter what – rain or no rain. Full pond or empty pond,
God does love us and he’s on our side.

Clauu
Well I still hope it rains and fills up the pond for the party. But if it
doesn’t I am still going to try really hard to trust God.

Farmer
That’s great Professor! Trusting God won’t always be easy but it
is a great thing to do. Would you like to show me the cupcakes
you made for the party?

Clauu
Oh no…it’s a big surprise…everyone wants to see the cupcakes…the
chickens have been trying to sneak into the barn all week!…..fade off

The Farmyard Week 1 Script

Farmer
Well hello boys and girls. How are you doing today?

Wait for it

Farmer
I’m sorry but I didn’t hear you. Can you say hello on the count
of moose? Chicken….cow…moose!

Wait for it.

Farmer
Wow…that was much better. Well I am so glad that you are here
with me today. My name is Farmer Karen and we’re in the Farm
Yard. It is such a great day! We are going to do all kinds of fun stuff….

Phone rings

Farmer
Excuse but I’ve got to answer this….Hello from the Farmyard…this
is Farmer Karen! Yes…okay….that is a problem…well I’ll be right
there. (hangs up) Kids I am so sorry but I have to go feed the pigs…
Kim the farm helper was supposed to, but didn’t, so I have to go
feed them. But first I need my shovel…where oh where is my handy
dandy shovel…mmmm

(looks around up and down while the shovel is obviously right there).

Farmer
Kids have you seen my shovel? Where? Over there? Oh I see…
thanks so much…

About to walk off camera.

Farmer
Oh…could you do me a favor? Usually I wake up Professor Clauu
but I have to go feed the pigs…could you do it for me? Please?!
Thanks! So on the count of duck…you need to yell as loud as you
can “ WAKE UP PROFESSOR CLAUU!”….are you ready! Great…
wait for the animals!…I’ll see you soon!
Pig…horse…duck

WAKE UP PROFESSOR CLAUU!

Clauu
MMM…ayeee…I’ll have a fish sandwich and a large root beer with
extra lemon...huh?..... what?….oh I thought I was at the drive thru.
What was that sound that I heard? mmmm….wow…it sounded like
a bunch of kids are right outside my window

Professor Clauu appears

Clauu
Well….it looks like there are some kids right outside my window.
Brilliant! Hello young people! Thank you for waking me up. I never
seem to be able to wake up from my alarm clock so Farmer Karen
helps me. Where is Farmer Karen? Do you know where she is?
(PAUSE) I’m sorry I couldn’t hear you – where did you say she went?

Kid responses…

Clauu
Oh…she had to go feed the pigs? Interesting…well let me tell you
something interesting about pigs that I found in a library book…
did you know that pigs are very smart animals even though they
seem to be in the mud all the time?! It’s true…they can’t sweat
like you and me so they roll in the mud to cool down. Isn’t that
brilliant that all that rolling around in the mud cools them off – and
I always thought they rolled in the mud cause they liked to be
dirty! ….I read it in an academic book so it’s true! And they can be
great pets…why my uncle Ahab had a pig for a pet…Moby Richard
he called him…oh that Moby Richard…he was a funny pig…always
with the jokes…loved to swim in the pond…I wonder (thinking to
himself)…do you mind if I share something with you? If you are
ready for me to share something, put your hands behind your ears.

Wait for it

Great…well…Yesterday I did something – something that was not
so great. I was hard at work on my latest book when Farmer Karen
asked me to clean up the barn. It is a classified mess. Anyway…I
told her I would clean it up before I went to bed. Well I got so wrapped
up in writing my book that I didn’t do it. And this morning, she asked
me how the cleaning went – and well, I’m embarrassed to tell you, but
I told a lie. I told her the cleaning went great!

Farmer comes back on the scene

Farmer
Hello Professor! So the kids were able to wake you up!

Professor
Oh yes most definitely…they are so nice and understanding. I was
just telling them about something I did that wasn’t so great.
Something I promised to do – but I didn’t do.

Farmer
Oh…about cleaning up the barn.

Clauu
Precisely – so you know about that?. I feel really bad about it.
I am very sure you hate me now because I told a little fib – and
I did not keep my promise to you. Your dislike for me is well earned.

Farmer
Oh professor. I still love you! I wish you would have cleaned the
barn like you promised. I don’t love what you did but I sure
still love you!

Clauu
How could you possibly love me after what I did! How can you look
at me after I have the lie that I told you?

Farmer
(thinking) Professor I think the best thing to do is for us to hear a
story from the Bible to help you understand why I still love you.
Would you like to hear a story from the Bible?

Clauu
Absolutely…I would be stupendously delighted…can I turn on the
farm a tron so the kids can watch too?

Farmer
Yes please

Hits a button and the roof opens up and a big TV screen pops out
for the story.

Illustrated Bible story with a voice over.

Farmer
So professor what do you think?

Clauu
Delightfully educational I do say my dear Farmer Karen. Who
knew that there were yellow pigs with orange spots! Amazingly
informative. Do you suppose yellow pigs with orange spots like to
frolic in the mud?

Farmer
Clauu – I meant what do you think about Rufus, the son that left?

Clauu
I’m a bit surprised actually. He was not a very nice fellow. He
wasted all of his money, he left his father, never wrote, never
called. If I was his father I would have been really mad. But when
he came back all the father wanted to do was have a party because
he was so happy his son had come home.

Farmer
His father loved him so much that even when Rufus did some stuff
that was wrong, his dad still loved him.

Clauu
Correct

Farmer
Well that’s the way that God feels about each and every one of us.
All of us do stuff we shouldn’t from time to time. We may tell a little
lie, or break a promise, or lose our temper with our friend, but God
still loves us. He really does!

Clauu
These young people here look so well behaved, of exceptional
character. Surely they always keep their promises and tell the truth.

Farmer
Well actually, even these kids do things they shouldn’t. . . . . Even
the adults out there watching – sometimes they do things they shouldn’t.

Clauu
Really? So what you are saying is everyone sometimes does stuff
they shouldn’t - but God still loves us – no matter what?

Farmer
Yep! God always loves us – no matter what!

Clauu
That is so educationally cool!

Farmer
So how about you and I clean up this barn together before the
pigs come home!

Clauu
Yes…that is positively a great idea. Did you know that pigs…..fade off

Planet Roughs

It'll make sense in week 7 of Space Chickens...which may

Stranger than Fiction

It's a great movie...the last narrative was awesome...so for posterity
I wroteit down...don't read if you haven't seen the movie! It's taken
out of context so it won't make much sense...

As Harold took a bite of Bavarian sugar cookie he finally had the
feeling that everything was going to be okay. Sometimes we lose
ourselves in fear and despair, in routine and constancy, in
hopelessness and tragedy. We can thank God for Bavarian sugar
cookies, and fortunately when there aren't any cookies we can still
find reassurance in a familar hand on our skin. Or a kind and loving
gesture. Or a subtle encouragement. Or a loving embrace. Or an
offer of comfort, not to mention hospital gurneys or nose plugs and
uneaten danish, soft spoken secrets, and fender strata casters and
maybe the occassional piece of fiction. And we must remember that
all these things, the nuances, the anamolies, the sublties, which we
assume only accessorize our days are in fact here for a much larger
and nobler cause. They are here to save our lives. I know the idea
seems strange, but I also know that it so happens to be true.

Vacation!

Had a great time down in South Carolina with the wife
and kid. Also had a bunch of time to draw and work on
the monkey story. It was really nice to be able to dig into
the story and think from the perspective of a monkey
family so that the illustrations would show what a monkey
family living would look like...not just monkeys living like
people. I know it sounds crazy...but it was fun.

The other nice thing was an almost complete disconnection
from the rest of the world. No internet, no email...only a
few phone calls. It was very quiet. I like quiet.

The part of the creative process small children shouldn't see

So the "Farm Yard video shoot is tomorrow and one of the puppets is
"Hermie"...Brissie was hard at work on Professor Clauu (pictures coming
soon) so I had to tackle Hermie myself.

As you can see...several stuffed animals were mangled in the process...but
if this violence in any way shape or form brings kids closer to Christ...I will
put it in the "okay" category...any other reason is just plain wasteful of the
stuff animal population.

Saturday, March 03, 2007

Paige all done!

So I think I'm done...but I'll probably spot something else
to tweak the next time I look at it. So for now...it's done.

Thursday, March 01, 2007

Goodness

Can't believe it's been over a week...have been cranking on a bunch of
projects that have nothing to do with drawing...the farm yard shoot is

next week so I should post some of those scripts....anyway...some

meeting scribbles.

Thursday, February 22, 2007

cool

I didn't do this...a friend did and he gave it to me...the other side has
some nice writing...it's cool..that's all...which is quite enough for me.

So the goal for this year is 210...the hope is I get to do this every day...and
if I don't please don't take it personal. Also...I apologize in advance for the
big toes. AP says I have nothing to be embarassed about...the it shows
me as a complete man...not perfect...but human...it's not a complete line
of BS...but there's a decent amount in there.
Enjoy!

Page roughs

sketching to sketch is fun...it's not mindless doodling (i'm pretty good at
that)...sketching for fun pulls you in and gives you other possibilities...and the
more you get into it the more ideas come into your head and you can't keep
up so you have to put notes next to the messy sketches just so you can
keep up. And when i say "you" I really mean "me"...but it's fun...and it's not
on a deadline (except my own) and blah blah blah...i want to get back to sketching.

let loose the monkey!

uhm...i spent all creative energy on the title....so there isn't much left to say...got
some "watercolor pencils" and am trying them out...it seems like cheating...i can
draw with these things and then add water?...part of the art of watercolor is
knowing where and when to add color...and you're dealing with the whole water part.

but i'm cool with bypassing the whole skill aspect if it makes cool pictures...for now...
